Everything you love about mountain hiking — the trail, the summit, the long exhale — extended into a snow-covered world where almost nobody goes.

Snowshoeing needs no technique and no ski skills. If you walk in the mountains in summer, you already know how to do this. What changes is the world around you: silent spruce forests, open plateaus of untracked snow, lynx and chamois prints crossing your path, and mountain light you will not see in any other season. The Sharr holds some of the snowiest, emptiest winter terrain in the Balkans — and we design every journey privately, for your group only.

Big, serious ranges that almost no one has heard of.

From the Sharr in the south-east to the Accursed Mountains in the north, these are high, protected, snow-sure ranges — and still wonderfully empty in winter.

Precipitation across the Balkans has shifted, and the valleys see less snow each decade. Reliable winter now sits higher — which is why we plan routes above roughly 1,500 m and move between areas as the season dictates, rather than promising snow in a fixed place on a fixed date.

Protected

National parks, not resorts

The Sharr is national park on both the Kosovo and North Macedonian sides; in the north, the Accursed Mountains are protected across Albania, Kosovo and Montenegro. You travel through some of the largest protected mountain landscapes in the region.

Lynx country

These ranges shelter the rare Balkan lynx, brown bear, chamois and golden eagles. In winter their stories are written in the snow — reading tracks with your guide becomes part of every day out.

What a day looks like

Unhurried, warm, and properly wild.

Morning

Coffee, briefing, boots on

Your guide checks the weather and snow, fits your snowshoes, and you set off — through spruce forest first, where the snow hangs heavy and the silence is total.

Midday

Above the treeline

The forest opens onto wide, white pastureland — summer sheep country, now an empty snowfield. Three to five hours of walking at your pace, with a col or a rounded summit as the day's high point.

Lunch

Hot food, big views

A mountain-hut lunch or a guide-carried hot meal, looking across the massif toward Ljuboten's pyramid or the Titov Vrv ridgeline.

Evening

Back to warmth

Descend into the blue afternoon light, hand back the snowshoes, and settle in — dinner, local wine or mountain tea, and tomorrow's plan drawn up by the fire.

The Sharr is where most programmes begin — three sides of one massif, each with its own character. Most journeys combine two or three bases; shorter ones focus on a single area. Your guide chooses daily routes by snow, weather and your group’s rhythm.

Albania's highest villages, home of Gorani mountain culture with its own century-old ski tradition. Walk straight from the village into open, rolling highland pasture.

1,780 m · North Macedonia

Popova Shapka

A historic high plateau above Tetovo with lift access straight onto open alpine terrain — rounded summits, huge snowfields and deep, dependable powder. The easiest big-mountain winter day in the Balkans.

900–2,524 m · Kosovo

Brezovica · Sharr National Park

The Kosovo side of the park: forested approaches that climb onto long, north-facing ridgelines where the snow lingers longest. Piribreg (2,524 m) is the classic objective — a real summit day with views across the whole massif.

Albania, your base

Every journey begins the Albanian way.

You arrive in Tirana and the mountains can wait one evening: a family-run guesthouse, a long table, home cooking and a glass of mountain raki while your guide walks you through the days ahead. We are an Albanian family company — hospitality is not a service we add, it is where we are from.

On the drive north-east you skirt the Gora highlands — home of the Gorani people, whose villages such as Shishtavec sit at 1,400 m on the Albanian flank of the Sharr, with their own centuries-old winter culture.

Your guide combines the three sides of the range by snow and season — the programme follows the best winter, not a fixed route.

Who it’s for

Made for summer hikers. No winter experience needed.

If you comfortably walk 4–5 hours in the hills in summer, you are ready for this. There is nothing technical to learn — snowshoes go on, and you walk. What you should expect is genuine mountain country: real weather, real remoteness, and days shaped to your fitness rather than a fixed schedule. That is exactly why every group goes out with a professional guide.
