Adventure and responsibility go hand in hand. We are the first tour operator in Albania to be certified to the GSTC Tour Operator Standard — the highest global benchmark for sustainable tourism.

In September 2025, Sondor Travel became the first tour operator in Albania to achieve certification to the GSTC Tour Operator Standard, issued by UCSL — United Certification Systems Ltd. This certification means our operations have been independently audited against the world's highest sustainability standard for tour operators.
The Global Sustainable Tourism Council sets the global standard for sustainable travel and tourism. GSTC certification is not self-declared — it requires independent third-party auditing of environmental, social, cultural, and management practices across every aspect of our operations.

At Sondor, sustainability isn't a marketing badge — it's a responsibility we've felt since 1991. When Sadik Malaj founded this company, Albania was one of Europe's most isolated and pristine countries. Thirty-five years later, as tourism grows rapidly, we have a duty to ensure that growth doesn't destroy the very things that make Albania worth visiting.
We are committed to protecting natural and cultural heritage while supporting the communities that call these places home. Whether you're a traveler seeking ethical experiences or a partner looking for responsible tourism alignment, our mission is the same: to create meaningful impact through conscious travel.
2025 was our first year of systematic environmental monitoring after certification. These are the movements against that baseline, all published in our annual report.
4,706 → 4,122 kg across all tours and vehicle types
2.07 → 1.91 kg — our main efficiency indicator
0.127 → 0.115 kg estimated across all departures
Eliminated on all tours and in the office
Not policies on a page. These are photographs from our departures, taken on the trail during our 2026 audit.
On the Alps treks, bags go over the passes with local horsemen rather than in a support vehicle. It removes a vehicle from the valley and puts the money with a family in it.
Several of the huts and guesthouses we use at altitude — including Dobërdol — generate their own power from solar panels, well beyond the reach of any grid.
Our accommodation partners and restaurants source from farmers in their own area. Breakfast in Theth is made from what Theth produces.
Guests carry waste back from remote locations to where it can actually be collected, rather than leaving small mountain villages to absorb it.
These codes govern how our guides work, what we ask of guests, and which partners we will and won't contract — alongside the performance data we publish each year. All form part of our GSTC documentation.
Observation at a distance, no exploitative activities, and full compliance with CITES and Albanian wildlife law.

Reduce impact through eco-friendly operations and "leave no trace" ethics. We minimize the environmental impact of every tour — reducing energy use, managing waste responsibly, and adhering to leave-no-trace principles in all natural settings.
Every tour should enrich the communities we visit. We employ locally, source locally, and invest locally. Your trip directly supports the families, guesthouses, and small businesses that make Albania what it is.
Albania's cultural traditions are living, not museum exhibits. We design experiences that connect travelers with authentic culture while ensuring those traditions are respected and sustained for future generations.
We are always evolving — refining our practices to meet the highest standards of sustainability. We uphold transparency through regular audits, measurable targets, and public reporting on our progress.
100% of our accommodation partners are locally owned Albanian businesses
100% Albanian guides and leaders, certified in culture and mountain expertise
100% of our core office staff are Albanian nationals
Meals sourced from regional producers and prepared by local cooks
After every trip we ask guests whether the guiding, the guesthouses and the handling of the places we visit matched what we publish here. Responses that raise a problem go into our corrective action log and are reviewed as part of our annual audit. Honest criticism is the useful kind.
