One family, two generations

We didn't come to Albania to start a travel business. We were born here.

Sondor isn't a company that was started by outsiders who discovered Albania on a backpacking trip. It was founded by Sadik Malaj — a man who spent his career under communism as the head of tourism in Tropojë, in the heart of the Albanian Alps. When the regime fell in 1991, he built one of the country's first private companies on the knowledge of a lifetime.

His son Dorien grew up in those same mountains. Cycling, skiing, hiking, climbing — the Albanian Alps weren't a destination, they were home. Today Dorien runs Sondor together with his wife Rexhina, who leads operations — the same intimate knowledge Sadik had, now paired with the systems, partnerships and digital infrastructure of a modern DMC. Their children come along to the trade fairs. It is still, in every sense, a family company.

Born in the mountains

Sadik Malaj grew up in Tropojë, deep in the Albanian Alps — the same mountains our guests now trek through. During Albania's decades of isolation under the communist regime, Sadik served as the head of tourism for the Tropojë region. He knew every trail, every village, every pass. He also knew that one day, the world would come to see what he saw every morning from his window: Europe's last great wilderness.

The beginning

One of Albania's first private companies

When communism fell and Albania opened its doors to the world, Sadik didn't wait. In 1991, he founded Sondor — one of the very first private companies in the country. The name is his two children: Son from Sonja, Dor from Dorien. While others were still making sense of the new reality, Sadik was already building the infrastructure to welcome international visitors to a nation most people couldn't find on a map. He started with what he knew best: the mountains, the trails, and the villages of the Albanian Alps.

The pioneer years

1990s

Building from nothing

There was no tourism industry in Albania in the 1990s. No hotel booking systems, no road signs, no guidebooks. Sondor built its operations from the ground up — finding guesthouses, training guides, mapping routes, and negotiating with communities who had never seen a foreign visitor. Every relationship was built by hand, every route walked first by Sadik and his team. Many of those same guesthouses and guides still work with us today.

The world starts calling

As Albania stabilized and the adventure travel industry grew, international tour operators began looking for reliable local partners. Sondor was ready. Our reputation for operational excellence and deep local knowledge attracted partnerships with some of the world's leading adventure travel companies. Exodus Travels, Topas, Viktors Farmor — they all came to Albania and found one DMC that could deliver at their standard.

From father to son

Dorien Malaj grew up in Tropojë surrounded by the same mountains his father had spent a lifetime exploring. Outdoor sports weren't a hobby — they were the backdrop to his childhood. Road cycling, mountain biking, skiing, hiking — the terrain was his playground. When Dorien took the reins at Sondor, he brought that personal passion into the business: expanding into cycling holidays, gravel adventures, ski touring, and e-MTB experiences that nobody else in Albania was offering.

Beyond the mountains

Sondor grew from a specialist Albanian trekking operator into a full-service DMC covering the entire Western Balkans. Cultural tours through Ottoman towns, MICE programmes for corporate groups, family adventures along the Riviera, multi-country circuits linking Albania with Kosovo, Montenegro and North Macedonia. Running it is a two-person job: Rexhina Malaj leads operations — the departures, the guides, the guesthouses, and the thousand details between a booking and a good week in the mountains — while Dorien handles product and partnerships. Behind them sit the digital systems we built to manage hundreds of departures, 700+ accommodations and partner relationships across six countries, all from our office in Tirana.

Sondor is now one of Albania's most established and trusted travel companies. We operate walking, cycling, cultural, winter, family, and MICE programs across Albania and the Western Balkans. We partner with the world's best adventure travel brands. We're building new digital tools to serve our guests better. And we're still a family business — still based in Tirana, still run by people who grew up in the mountains we send you to, with the next generation already coming along to the trade fairs. Some things shouldn't change.
