Arrive at Tirana International Airport and transfer to the hotel. After a rest, a guided walk through the capital: the public buildings raised by Italian architects in the 1930s, the Et'hem Bey Mosque, the pedestrian centre and the Blloku quarter, once closed to ordinary Albanians. Dinner in a Tirana restaurant. Entry to the mosque interior depends on the day and on mosque staff, so it cannot be guaranteed.
The morning begins at Bunk'Art 1, the dictator's atomic shelter on the edge of Tirana, now a museum of daily life under communism. We drive on to the agritourism farm at Marikaj for a lunch of central Albanian dishes, then continue to Berat, where a guided walk takes in the Mangalem and Gorica quarters whose stacked Ottoman houses put the town on the UNESCO list. 136 km, about 2h30 driving.
We climb to Berat Castle, inhabited since the 4th century BC and still lived in today, and visit the Onufri iconography museum inside the walls. Lunch is in a restaurant within the castle. In the afternoon we cross into North Macedonia at Qafe Thane and follow the lake through Struga to Ohrid, with free time before dinner. 156 km, about 3h30 driving.
A guided tour of Ohrid, on the UNESCO list since 1979: Tsar Samuel's fortress, the ancient amphitheatre, and the churches of St Kaneo and St Sophia. After lunch near the lake shore we visit the monastery of Saint Naum, close to the Albanian border and one of the most venerated sites in the country. The rest of the day is free. 67 km, about 2h10 driving.
We travel north to Skopje and have lunch in a traditional restaurant before the guided walk begins. Through the old bazaar to the Mustafa Pasha Mosque, over the Stone Bridge to Macedonia Square and the Mother Teresa memorial house, ending at the old railway station whose clock still shows the moment the 1963 earthquake struck. 176 km, about 3h40 driving.
Into Kosovo, passing through Strpce and down to Prizren, a city where Serbian, Albanian and Turkish communities live side by side and Ottoman architecture still shapes the streets. We visit the old town and Sinan Pasha's Mosque, then continue to Decani for the interior of Visoki Decani, a UNESCO-listed Serbian Orthodox monastery holding frescoes from the 14th century. Dinner and overnight in Peja. 176 km, about 3h50 driving.
An early start for the long drive north into Bosnia and Herzegovina, with lunch on the road at Bjelo Polje. We reach Visegrad, the town Ivo Andric made famous in his novel about the bridge on the Drina, in the late afternoon. 230 km, about 5h driving.
The morning is spent at the Ivo Andric House and Andricgrad, the stone town built in his honour, and at the bridge over the Drina, completed in 1571. We then drive to Sarajevo and visit the Tunnel of Hope, the passage under the airport runway that kept the city supplied through the siege. Free time in the city, then dinner in a Sarajevo restaurant. 113 km, about 2h10 driving.
A local guide takes us through the city's layered history. We start at the Latin Bridge and the corner where Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in 1914, then walk into Bascarsija, the Ottoman-era bazaar of coppersmiths and rug sellers, and on through streets where Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian and modern architecture stand within sight of one another. The afternoon is free for Bosnian coffee and the city's own rhythm.
On the road south we stop at Jablanica, a site of Yugoslav partisan resistance in the Second World War, then at Blagaj, where a dervish house sits at the foot of a cliff beside the source of the Buna. Lunch is here. In the afternoon we reach Mostar for the old town and the Old Bridge, with the rest of the day free. 180 km, about 3h driving.
An early departure for Stolac on the Bregava river and a guided visit to the Radimlja necropolis, where 133 carved stecci, medieval tombstones with bas-relief figures and geometric motifs, date from the 15th and 16th centuries. We continue south to Kotor, walled and Venetian on its bay, for lunch and an hour's guided tour of the old town. Transfer to Tivat, free time by the marina, and a farewell dinner. 175 km, about 4h driving.
A free morning on the Tivat marina before departing along the coast, passing Budva and the island of Sveti Stefan, to Podgorica airport and the end of the tour. 100 km, about 2h driving.
This is a cultural touring holiday at an unhurried pace. Expect several kilometres of walking on most active days, largely on cobbled streets, castle hills and historic old towns with uneven stone underfoot.
Some historic sites — castles, monasteries and old-town quarters — have steps, steep cobbles and no step-free route, so they cannot be made fully accessible. Tell us your requirements before booking and we will be honest about which sites work and which do not.
If you or anyone in your group has specific accessibility needs, tell us before you book. We will give you an honest answer about what this tour can accommodate — including saying so when the answer is that it can't.
