Ways to travel · Self-guided

Go alone. Just not unsupported.

The same routes, guesthouses and mountain huts as our guided trips — walked or ridden at your own pace, with everything booked ahead and a local team behind you.

Your pace

Start when you like, stop where you like, take the long way if the day is good

Beds booked

Guesthouses and mountain huts reserved in your name, in the right village each night

Bags moved

Luggage travels ahead by vehicle or horse — you walk with a day pack

Team on call

Daily check-ins and a local number that answers when the mountain changes plans

The promise

The mountain to yourself, and none of the logistics.

Self-guided doesn’t mean figuring it out alone. The freedom is the point — but the logistics of these mountains are not a holiday. Remote guesthouses don’t take online bookings, the 4×4 sections need a driver who knows the road, and phone signal comes and goes. We handle all of that, so the only decision you make each morning is when to start walking.

Self-guided trips

Two routes, ready to walk or ride.

Want a different route, or longer?

Both trips flex, and we build self-guided routes from scratch — including across Kosovo, Montenegro and North Macedonia.

What we arrange

Self-guided isn’t on your own.

  • Route notes and GPX

Turn-by-turn notes and GPS tracks for every stage, sent before you travel and loaded on your phone or device.

  • Beds booked ahead

Family-run guesthouses and mountain huts, reserved in your name — places that don't take online bookings.

  • Luggage moved

Your bags travel between stops by vehicle where there's a road, and by horse where there isn't.

  • All the transfers

Airport pick-up, the awkward 4×4 sections, ferry tickets and the transfer at the end — arranged and paid.

  • Half board where it matters

Dinner and breakfast in the mountain villages, plus picnic lunches on the days with nothing in between.

  • Someone on the ground

Daily check-ins and a local number that answers. If weather closes a pass or a knee gives out, we move things.

Finding your way

You navigate. We make sure that’s easy.

Notes written by the people who walk it

Not translated from a brochure — written by our guides, with the junctions that actually confuse people called out.

GPX for phone or GPS

Every stage as a track you can follow offline. No signal needed once it's downloaded.

Waymarked trails

The main routes carry painted waymarks and signposts. Your notes tell you where they thin out.

A number that answers

If you're standing at a junction unsure, call. Someone in Tirana knows that junction.

Where you sleep

Beds you could not book yourself.

Family guesthouses in the valleys, simple huts on the high pastures. Most have no website, no booking engine and patchy signal — you reserve them by knowing the family, which is what thirty-five years buys you.

Dinner is whatever the house is cooking, eaten at the family table, usually with more of it than you can finish. On the remote stages that meal is the only one for fifteen kilometres in any direction.

Who it’s for

Confident walkers and riders. Not necessarily experts.

If you’ve walked marked trails in the Alps or ridden a multi-day route before, you have everything you need. You should be comfortable reading a track on your phone and happy with four to six hours of moving a day. What you don’t need is mountain experience, a sense of direction, or any Albanian.

Travelling as a pair or a small group of friends suits this best — though we’ve sent plenty of solo walkers out happily too.

The Sondor difference

Thirty-five years on the ground. One family.

A family DMC since 1991

Founded by Sadik Malaj and run today by the second generation, Sondor is Albania's longest-established destination management company. Your booking is handled by the family who runs the trips.

Certified, not just claimed

The first GSTC-certified company in Albania, a Glasgow Declaration signatory, and winner of the UNDP SDG Business Pioneers Award 2025.

Guesthouses we've used for decades

The beds you sleep in belong to families we've worked with for years — which is why they answer the phone when we need a room moved.
