Gjirokastra Day Tours
Our Gjirokastra Day Tours will show you the best of the city in a day. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the old town of Gjirokaster is famous for being a well-preserved Ottoman-style town, with its fortress overlooking the whole city, the old houses lean against the slopes of the hills with their old wooden facades. The main characteristic of Gjirokastra is the intense use of stone in building the houses, which look like tiny fortresses, the streets of cobblestone, which all head to Bazaar. The most remarkable structure of the city is the castle, which is the greatest in Albania, and is no wonder why most our our day tours include it in our program. Inside the castle, you can visit the Museum of Weapons, opened in 1971. You can also visit the Mosque of Bazaar, built-in 1557. During your stay in Gjirokastra, you can select different day tours which will take you to the Ethnographic Museum, located in the former house of the communist dictator Enver Hoxha. One of the most interested spots to visit is as well Sokaku i te Marreve which means the 'Mad People Street'. In that same spot you can visit the reconstructed house of the famous Albanian author Ismail Kadare. Being the birthplace of the Nobel-laurate novelist Ismail Kadare and the notorious communist leader Enver Hoxha, Gjirokastra is interesting and controversial as it stores well all aspects of history.
