Romeo and Juliet Bridge tour takes you Sarajevo’s historical part. The bridge is located over the Miljacka River in Sarajevo. The bridge is a typical bridge with simple architecture that offers great views. However, the bridge has a history and that is the reason it is worthy of a visit. Nowadays it is a symbolic landmark because of a story that reminds that of Romeo and Juliet. However, the story is slightly different. There was a couple who was much in love and lived during the Bosnian War. The girl was Bosnian and the guy was a Bosnian Serb.
Moreover, one was Muslim and the other Orthodox. They had agreed to flee the country to enjoy their love in the Netherlands. They woke one morning ready to leave everything behind and as soon as they reached the bridge they were shot by a Serb Sniper. Moreover, it was in the same spot where two girls named Olga and Suada were killed a year ago.
The girl was alive for 15 minutes after the shooting and she crawled near her love’s chest and died with him. However, nobody approached the couple for about 8 days until the Serbian Army took them. Only the boy’s mother was allowed at the funeral. Later on, the bridge is named The Romeo and Juliet Bridge to honor the couple who portray the war.
