On this day’s tour of Gjirokastra starting with a transfer from Tirana, we will discover Argyrokastra, a magical hillside town in Albania.
Defined by its roads paved with chunky limestone and shale and imposing slate-roofed houses, Gjirokastër is a magical hillside town. Immerse yourself in the local life while enjoying the castle with its views of the picturesque Drina Valley. The town of Gjirokaster is under UNESCO heritage protection as one of the most well preserved Ottoman towns. But not only, but Gjirokaster is also the birthplace of communist Enver Hoxha and one of Albania’s most famous writers Ismail Kadare.
It has one of the most beautiful fortresses in the country. As majestic as it looks from the outside is the same majestic on the inside. From the fortress, you can see the white houses and cobblestone streets of the town.
The view from the fortress is spectacular. This castle has a rich history. In recent history, it’s served as a prison, first by the King of the Albanians, Zog I, then by the Nazis, and finally by the communist regime. Since 1971, it has served as a military museum. Visiting this place and viewing the dozens of war tanks, along with the United States Air Force plane that the Communists captured is free. If you would like to see artillery and memorabilia from the times of the Communist resistance against Nazi occupation
From up there, you see the mountains and valleys and beautiful sunsets. Roads paved with chunky limestone and shale take you back in time.
The stone city as they call it is a town of historical importance. As the city has survived through different wars.
The Gjirokastra Day Tour will leave you amazed.

Book this tour with us and we will take you on a trip to remember.
We will have the chance to walk the narrow cobble streets of the medieval bazaar and Ottoman-style houses where artisan women will be making doilies as well as carving wood and silver. Following this, we will have the unique experience of visiting the locals in their own homes and being treated to traditional, stone-ground coffee as well as "mountain tea." We will continue our tour in other quarters of Gjirokastra, including a visit to the castle itself. We will then have the chance to taste regional food cooked by locals.
To finish off our tour, we will visit the historic Skenduli House that was built in 1700 (most likely being shown around by Mr Skenduli himself) as well as the Ethnographic Museum. Before completing the tour, you'll have free time to explore the city as you wish, either by relaxing with a coffee and enjoying the view or exploring more of the history that Gjirokastra has to offer.
