About this tour

Snowshoeing in Montenegro, Kosovo, and Albania.

The Mountains encircling southern Montenegro, eastern Kosovo, and northern Albania are fantastic. Especially for winter activities and deep snow exploration. Our local guides will guide you through some of the most scenic and untouched winter routes in the Balkan. So, this is your chance to get away from the crowds and experience the beauty and rugged landscape of the Alps.

Snowshoeing in Montenegro – Kolasin

You will arrive at Podgorica Airport and meet the group. We will then be transferred to Kolašin, a small town in Northern Montenegro. Kolasin is located at an altitude of 954 m and offers excellent snowshoeing opportunities during the winter season. Kolašin is one of the main Winter Attractions in Montenegro due to its snow activities and easy accessibility during the winter period. Located at the foot of Bjelasica and Sinjajevina mountains, it offers very good conditions for winter activities including skiing, snowshoeing, and other winter activities.

We will explore the area around Kolašin as we snowshoe from Kolašin (954 m) to Bojiste at an altitude of 1200 m and back. This 8-kilometer walk will take us around five hours. The total altitude change is +/- 200m. In the afternoon we will leave the hotel in Kolašin and will drive the 2.5 hours toward the city of Rožaje.

Although Rožaje is an amazing winter adventure destination in and of itself, we will skip to the best part, the “Grope” Mountain Cabin. After a 6-7 hour hike from Rožaje at an altitude of 1045 m up the Haile Mountain, we will arrive at the 1900m mountain cabin where we will spend the night. The ground floor of the cabin is used as a living room and is decorated in a traditional style, while the second floor can accommodate up to 40 people.

Snowshoeing in Montenegro and Kosovo

After a wonderful evening and morning in Grope Mountain Cabin, we will snowshoe back down to the city of Rožaje and drive the 1.5 hours toward the city of Peja in Kosovo. We will reach Peja in the afternoon and be accommodated in the city center.

We will be transferred to the village of Bogë and from there will drive through Rugova Gorge which is about 25 km in length and about 1,000 meters deep. Rugova gorge is considered one of the longest and deepest canyons in Europe. Boga is known for its outstanding natural beauties and fascinating pastoral landscape. The snow conditions are amazing as well. The snow season is so long that every once in a while it even extends until July. The snow depth ranges from 30 cm up to 2m in less accessible areas.

From Bogë we drive back toward Albania where we will cross the border by snowshoe. Before the border, however, we will visit the UNESCO-protected Monastery of Decani. This 14th-century monastery is one of the largest and most beautifully preserved medieval churches in the Balkans. It stores many mural frescos, some dating back to when the monastery itself was built. After lunch in the village of Koshare near the border, we will start snowshoeing across the border. In the afternoon we will reach the small village of Tropoja on the Albanian side. There we will stay in the quaint Aste Guesthouse.

Snowshoeing in Montenegro and Albania

We will be transferred from the village to Valbona National Park. The peaks surrounding Valbona Valley range from 2500 m and up so the view will be marvelous.  Our snowshoeing trails will take us through the small village of Kukaj and up toward the left side of White Circle mountain. On a clear day, the breathtaking Jezerca Mountain Peak, the highest in Northern Albania, will be visible. We will make a loop near the ridge of White Circle and return to the village of Kukaj.

Another beautiful day spent in Valbona Valley. Depending on the snow conditions we will either snowshoe toward Grykat E Hapta Mountain range or through the forest on the right side of the valley. The snowshoeing trails will take us between the snow-covered beech and pine forests which are a perfect background on a clear winter day.

The snowshoeing tour in Montenegro Kosovo and Albania have also some history to offer.
