About this tour

Bird-watching in Albania takes you to Karavasta.

The National Park of Divjaka-Karavasta, is the largest non-coastal park in Albania. It’s a park rich in Flora and Fauna.

The park consists of the Lagoon of Karavasta. The lagoon hosts 6,4 % of the Dalmatian Pelicans of Europe’s population.

The tour starts on the sandy off-road at the National park of Divjake, from the pine forest to the sandy beach.
Get picked up from your hotel in Tirana at 8:30 am ready for the tour to begin at 9:00 am. Travel to Karavasta Lagoon, the largest offshore wetland in Albania, approximately one hour away. At the lagoon, stroll around and enjoy scenic views of pine trees, small islands, and the long sandy bar which separates Karavasta from the Adriatic Sea.

The guide explains the history of the lagoon, as well as some of the rare flora and fauna which can be found there. Keep an eye out for Dalmatian pelicans, as well as flamingos and other wildlife.
There is no house or a bar-restaurant, except the two watchtowers for the birds. These are equipped with binoculars and a telescope. Nowadays there are around 4100 hectares, 15.4 km long, and a 4.1 km wide wetland complex with sea salt water, exclusively for the birds.

Bird-Watching in Albania a trip to the lagoon

Take a trip along the sandy belt between the Karavasta and the Godulla lagoons in the southern part of Divjaka. The lagoons are connected by three channels and surrounded on all sides by brackish water habitats, forests, and Mediterranean shrubs. Arrive at Divjaka National Park, a dense forest of pines and deciduous trees on the northern part of the Karavasta lagoon set between the sea beach, agricultural fields, and the River Shkumbini. Enjoy the serene surroundings and snap some photographs of this unique habitat.

6.4% of the global population of Pelicans Crispus is found exactly in this lagoon.

They multiply and sit on their eggs undisturbed in pairs, at the lagoon islands. Everything can be seen with a telescope, or we may approach by a boat, but up to 150 meters away, as the pelicans are very sensitive to the noise, and as soon as they hear it, they may abandon the eggs, causing the hatching to fail.
At the same time, many migratory birds come to Karavasta as they find peace; such are whole groups of flamingos, cormorants, also herons, wild ducks, etc.
These all populate the lagoon tufted.

Bird-watching in Albania is a great experience.
