Balkan Explorer, Albania to Montenegro

This trip begins with a 2 day visit in Albania where we visit: Tirana, the capital of Albania and Kruja the medieval chief-town. We continue to Kosovo where for another 2 days we visit the beautiful town of Prizren, the 14th century church of Decani, and the Serbian Patriarchate in Peja. The highlight of this tour is Sarajevo where we will stay for 2 nights. We will visit the Tunnel of Hope, drive through Sniper Alley and continue our guided walk through the old quarter Baščaršija. The tour will take us the next day to Blagaj where we will visit the Dervish Tekke and to Mostar where we will visit the Old Town and Mostar Bridge. In Dubrovnik we will be guided through the main street and get a deep understanding of the Old Town. The last days of the tour are spent in Kotor, Budva and Cetinje, Montenegro before heading to Podgorica Airport.

Day 1. Airport Transfer – Tirana.
Start at Mother Theresa Airport and transfer to the hotel to check-in. After a short rest we go for a walk to visit the city center. Several object situated in the city center present a lot of historical and architectural value among which we will visit Et’hem Bey Mosque, Ministerial Buildings, Mother Teresa Square, former communist Block.

Day 2. Tirana – Marikaj – Kruja – Rubik.
Breakfast in Tirana. We start the day by visiting the National Museum, rich with artifacts where we can learn more about the history of Albanians from antiquity to modern era. One of the most oldest still preserved object of Tirana center are: The Clock Tower, Mosque and Toptan castle. Near the castle recently have been found ruins dating back to the 6th century AD. For lunch we go to Marikaj village where we have the chance to meet with a local family be welcomed in their house by them. After lunch we travel to Kruja and visit Scanderbeg’s museum and castle. This museum was built in memory of Scanderbeg a historical figure for the Albanians. In the afternoon we accommodate in a very nice hotel in Rubik a small town in central Albania.

Day 3. Rubik – Prizren – Gjakova – Deçan – Peja (Kosovo )
Breakfast Rubik. This morning we travel to Kosovo a region full of history and culture both for Albanians and Serbs. Prizren is well known for its beautiful mosques and preserved churches. During the Ottoman period was one of the most important centers of Kosovo Vilayet. We continue traveling to Gjakova where we will have a walk through it’s old bazaar and lunch. The bazaar of Gjakova is one of the longest in the Balkan, a beautiful testimony of Ottoman Architecture. Next we travel to visit the Serbian Orthodox Monastery of Decani protected by UNESCO. Visoki Dečani is one of the largest medieval churches in the Balkan beautifully preserved to nowadays. It stores many frescos dating to the 14th century. As we travel to Peja we visit the Serbian Orthodox Patriarchy as one of the most important religious objects of Serbia in Kosovo. Here you can learn why Kosovo is so important for the Serbian people.

Day 4. Pejë (Kosovo) – Mojkovac – Dobrilovina – Žabljak
Breakfast Peja. The journey continues through the mountainous areas of Kosovo on to Montenegro. We will make plenty of breaks to enjoy the magnificent landscape of Montenegro. Lunch will be in a family house in Dobrilovina. Dobrilovina is known especially for river rafting. Photo stop in Tara Bridge. Đurđevića Tara Bridge was built between 1937 and 1940 during ex- Yugoslavia. It is 365 metres long and at the time of its completion, it was the biggest vehicular concrete arch bridge in Europe. Next we reach Žabljak in the heart of Durmitor National Park

Day 5. Žabljak – Metaljka (Montenegro) Foca – Sarajevo. (Bosnia).
Breakfast Žabljak. Today we travel to Sarajevo. On the way we will make several breaks to enjoy the scenery. Accommodation in the hotel and dinner in Sarajevo.

Day 6. Sarajevo
Breakfast Sarajevo. Today we start the morning by visiting the Tunnel of Hope so important during the war. We continue our visit with the center, Bashcarshija, Mosque, Catholic Church, Orthodox church, Saraj, Bezistani. Lunch organized by Sondor Travel. The afternoon is at group leisure.

Day 7. Sarajevo – Mostar
Breakfast Sarajevo. On the way to Mostar we visit Jablanica, a symbol of World War II for the ex-yugoslavian partizans. Next we travel to Blagaj for lunch. First we visit the Dervish House and the sources of river Buna. After lunch we head to Mostar where we visit the Catholic church, Old bridge and old town. The remainder of the day is at group leisure to enjoy. Accommodation in Mostar (Bosnia & Herzegovina).

Day 8. Mostar – Metkovic – Dubrovnik (Croatia) – Kotorr – Budva ( Montenegro )
Breakfast Mostar. On the way to Dubrovnik we visit the small town of Počtelj. Next through Metkovic we travel to Dubrovnik where we get the chance to visit the old town. Dubrovnik is one of the most important tourist sites in the Dalmatian coast. Lunch will be in the old town. After lunch we will be guided by the local guide for 1 hour to show us the main highlights of the old town. The remainder of the day is at group leisure to enjoy.

Day 9. Dubrovnik – Kotor – St. Stefan – Budva
Breakfast Dubrovnik. We travel afterwards to Kotor a world heritage site ( UNESCO ) known for its impressive views and picturesque venetian architecture. Budva is one of the most attractive coastal cities of Montenegro and the old part of the city is the jewel on the crown. Along the banks of the port you will see many beautiful yachts a testimony of the city’s attractiveness. Lunch will be organized near Kotor. Dinner and accommodation in Budva (Montenegro)

Day 10. Budva – Podgorica
Breakfast Budva. We depart to Podgorica. On our way we visit the Royal Capital of Montenegro, Cetinje. Next we travel to Podgorica Airport where the tour ends.
